Your post-operative care is critical to the success of your weight loss surgery. For follow up, we usually like to see our patients the first time within 7 to 10 days of the surgery, and then at 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months. Yearly follow-ups thereafter are also recommended. It is also important to follow the recommendations for scheduled office visits as well as routine blood work to avoid any long-term nutritional deficiencies that may develop slowly. Prevention and early intervention is the best way to avoid these.
With this in mind, it is imperative that the patient commits to the post-operative follow-up routine with their surgeon and primary care. We are able to order the laboratory studies in the immediate post-operative phase.
For those patients that we have not seen for more than a year, we are unable to order laboratory studies unless an office visit is scheduled and the patient is seen. Alternatively, a patient’s primary care can provide the follow-up. The following laboratory studies are recommended on a yearly basis in order to evaluate not only the nutritional status but also to identify any potential vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
